What exactly is Open Submissions?
Our development team is constantly on the lookout for the very best material. That's why we decided to take down the traditional barriers to getting your material read. Open Submissions allows you to skip the query letter, the agent, and the industry recommendation and get your material directly to us. The ultimate goal of our Open Submissions policy is to find great scripts that we can put into our development pipeline.

How much does it cost to submit material?
Our current fees are:

  • First Impressions: $9.99
  • Screenplay Scorecard: $39.99
  • Basic Script Coverage: $99.99
  • Detailed Script Coverage: $199.99

Why is there a fee involved?
By taking down some barriers, we believe we are providing a unique service to filmmakers. Charging a small fee ensures that the number of submissions we receive stay at a manageable level. In exchange, we guarantee you a response to your material within a reasonable time frame. Of course, if you have opted for the Screenplay Scorecard or our Coverage Service, you will also receive the feedback you paid for. At Pavaline, the power to get to us is always in your hands. If you do not feel comfortable about our policies, however, then perhaps we are not the right home for your material.

What do fees go toward?
They go toward supplementing what we pay our readers.

Why do I have to sign a submission release form?
Release forms are standard industry practice and protect both you and us. A release form protects you from our using your material in any way whatsoever without your permission, and it protects us in the event that we have or will receive material from another source that is similar to yours. We suggest that you fully read and understand our release form before you electronically sign it.

When I sign the submission release form, does that mean you own my material?
No. Until you enter into an option and/or purchase agreement with Pavaline regarding your submission, you retain full copyright (100%) to your material.

Who will be reading my material?
Your submissions are read by highly qualified, experienced industry professionals that we hand-select to be on our team. The readers we hire know what we are looking for and have an excellent understanding of the medium. If your material gets a CONSIDERATION or better, it is then read a second time by an executive on our development staff.

Will I receive any feedback?
Our professional readers guarantee a response. The level of feedback you receive depends on the service you purchased:

  • First Impressions: You will receive a short pass/consider response on up to 20 pages of your material (short script or story, synopsis/treatment, outline, or the first 20 pages of your script). If you submit a script and we keep reading past the first 20 pages, you will get a FREE scorecard. See sample of First Impressions Response.
  • Screenplay Scorecard: Our readers score the different elements in your script (concept, plot, characters, dialogue, etc.) on a scale of 1-10 as well as give you some possible marketing indications. For more details, see the question "How does the Screenplay Scorecard work?" below for a sample of a Screenplay Scorecard.
  • Basic Script Coverage: You will receive the Screenplay Scorecard, plus 2-3 pages of notes to give you an idea of what's working and what's not.
  • Detailed Script Coverage: You will receive the Screenplay Scorecard, plus 6-8 pages of notes detailing specific areas for improvement.

How does the Screenplay Scorecard work?
The Screenplay Scorecard has three objectives:
  1. To provide you with feedback.
  2. To help us find talented writers.
  3. To help us find great scripts.
Our readers evaluate your script's elements (concept, plot, characters, dialogue, etc.) on a scale of 1-10. We then use a weighted scoring system to come up with two figures. The first is a PASS, CONSIDER, or RECOMMEND for the writer. The second is a PASS, CONSIDER, or RECOMMEND for the script. For example, if you scored high on concept, not so high on plot, but high again on dialogue, the weighting would tip more in your favor as a writer and less toward that particular script. A score of 7.0 in either category gets you a CONSIDER in that category, and a score of 8.5 gets you a RECOMMEND. See sample scorecard.

I submitted to Pavaline through Open Submissions and I got a CONSIDER or RECOMMEND.
What happens now?

Our goal is to build a relationship with talented writers, so if you received a consider or recommend, congratulations - that means you have caught our eye! If you scored highly as a writer, our development executives will take a closer look at your material and will contact you to learn more about you and your goals. I f we like what we hear, we will invite you to stay in contact with us and pitch us your ideas whenever you like. If you scored highly on your script, our development executives will take a closer look at your material to see if it meets our current production needs. If the answer is yes, you will be contacted to discuss a possible option. If the answer is no, we will contact you to explain why. In both cases, we would like to stay in touch with you.

Can I submit if I am not a Pavaline Network member?
Basic membership is free and is required. If you are not already a member, you will be automatically taken to registration once you start the submission process. As a basic member, you will have to pay the full fee for the service you are purchasing. Professional members automatically receive a 25% discount on all services, including open submissions.

Are you looking for a particular genre?
Because we are looking to build long-term relationships with talented writers, we encourage you to submit your best material regardless of genre.

Does my script have to be in a particular format?
Yes, your script should be in standard entertainment industry script format.
See our Script Format Sample for details.

Is there a minimum and/or maximum page length?
Yes. If you submit a full-length feature, it should be at least 95 pages and no more than 125 pages in length.

Why do you need a logline?
Loglines make it easier for us to discuss scripts at our development meetings and ensure we are all on the same page and talking about the same material.

I do not live in the US. Can I still submit?
Yes. We welcome submissions from other countries. However, please keep the following in mind:

  • your script must be in English,
  • you should speak and write English well enough to be able to participate in development meetings,
  • your submission fee must be paid online and in US dollars.

I have an agent/am an optioned screenwriter/have sold a script. Can I still submit?
Yes, as long as you: own all rights to the material you are entering; it is not currently under option; it has not been sold; and you agree to our terms and submission release agreement. If your script is optioned or sold after you submit it to us, you must notify Pavaline immediately.

I wrote the script I am submitting with my writing partner. Can I still submit?
During the submission process, you will be asked to supply the names and contact information of your co-author(s). We will then contact them individually to procure their authorization. Please be advised that we will not be able to review your co-written material until all authors have individually agreed to our terms and submission release agreement.

Can I submit more than one script?
Of course. You can use our Open Submissions service as often as you want. Simply select the level of service you would like and follow the upload procedure.

I have rewritten my script since I submitted it. Can I submit the new version?
We try to get your material to our readers as quickly as possible. Therefore, we cannot accept any substitutions, new drafts, or corrected pages on submissions you have already made. However, you may submit a revised draft as a new submission.

I just submitted my script. How will I know you received it?
After you have completed your submission, we will send you a confirmation receipt by e-mail. If you do not hear from us within a reasonable time, send an email to service@pavaline.com and include the following information: your name, address, phone number, email address you registered with, and the title of your material.
